Embroidered iron-on patches are one of the easiest ways to personalize a jacket, backpack, hat, or tote — no sewing machine required. Follow this quick guide to get a patch that sticks for good.
What you'll need
- Your embroidered iron-on patch
- A household iron (no steam holes needed, but steam setting is fine)
- A thin cotton cloth or pillowcase (to protect the patch and fabric)
- A hard, heat-safe surface (ironing board or countertop with a towel)
Step-by-step application
- Preheat your iron. Set it to the cotton/high heat setting (no steam). Let it fully heat up for about a minute.
- Prep the fabric. Lay your jacket, bag, or hat flat on a hard, heat-safe surface. Avoid ironing directly on soft or padded surfaces — you need firm, even pressure.
- Position the patch. Place the patch adhesive-side down exactly where you want it. Double-check placement now — once it's pressed, it's tough to reposition.
- Cover and press. Place a thin cotton cloth over the patch to protect it, then press the iron down firmly for 20–30 seconds. Don't slide the iron — hold it in place and apply steady pressure.
- Flip and repeat. If the garment allows, turn it inside out and iron the inside of the patch area for another 15–20 seconds. This helps the adhesive bond all the way through the fabric.
- Let it cool. Allow the patch to cool completely (about 2 minutes) before touching or wearing. The bond gets stronger as it cools.
Want it to last through the wash?
For high-wash items like everyday jackets or backpacks, we recommend adding a few stitches around the edge of the patch after ironing. All of our patches are sew-on friendly too — the embroidered edge makes it easy to hand-stitch around the border for a permanent hold.
Fabrics to be careful with
Iron-on adhesive works best on cotton, denim, canvas, and most twill fabrics. It does not work well on leather, nylon, waterproof/technical fabrics, or anything that can't handle direct heat. When in doubt, stitch it on instead, or test on a hidden corner of the fabric first.
